Number 3: Howard Lederer – WPT Finals 2002 – “8% to $320k”
The World Poker Tour Finals of 2002 at Foxwoods was probably the best field in poker history; of the 90 players who entered, 89 were professionals. Howard Lederer made it to the final table, but was seriously short stacked with less than 8% of the chips in circulation sat in front of him. Howard Lederer is known as “The Professor” as he is one of the few poker players who almost entirely relies on maths to make his poker decisions.....well, almost entirely.
What ensued was nothing short of spectacular. Lederer, with a combination of extremely astute reads and some superb hole cards, climbed his way from last position, eliminating player after player and putting ‘The Fear’ into all of the other players sat at the table. Hardened professionals were playing down huge hands when faced with small raises from an aggressive Lederer, his domination of some of the best players in the world was awe inspiring.
When it came to the final two players, Lederer was a significant chip leader and went heads up with Layne Flack, his domination continued and in under an hour, Lederer was the WPT Champion, walking away with over $300,000 in first prize money.
